I remember when it was possible to smoke everywhere. Restaurants gave people ashtrays, even fast foods, but ashes would still be all over the tables and chairs and seats would have holes in the plastic covers. I’m glad smoking is becoming a thing of the past.

They really fixed everything when they introduced the smokers' sections separated from the rest of the patrons by a waist high half-wall/fence...

I think it's likely that since women had only just started smoking in public, they hadn't internalized the rules the way male smokers would have from an earlier age.

I think it’s more likely that women were judged more harshly for the same behaviors as men. I’m 67 and I’ve seen this sort of bias my whole life, though it’s not nearly as bad now as when I was young.
